All about Cortisol
FACTS: Cortisol is a hormone that plays a critical role in metabolism and your body’s immune system and response to stress. Produced by the adrenal glands, cortisol helps regulate many of your body’s processes, including blood sugar levels, blood pressure and inflammation. Often referred to as the “stress hormone,” cortisol is released in response to stressors, whether physical or emotional, to help your body manage and adapt to challenging situations.
Cortisol was first discovered in the 1930s when scientists found that the adrenal glands produced this hormone in response to stress. Over the years research has shown that cortisol is essential not only for stress management, but also for maintaining balance in a variety of bodily functions. It helps control your body's sleep-wake cycle, regulates metabolism and maintains energy levels. Without cortisol, we would struggle to manage even routine daily functions.
While cortisol is vital for health, it is most often associated with the body's “fight-or-flight” response. When faced with a stressful situation, cortisol helps prepare your body by increasing blood sugar and blood pressure, improving brain function and suppressing non-essential functions like digestion. These temporary boosts allow you to focus on the immediate challenge. However, prolonged elevated levels of cortisol can be harmful, contributing to health issues like anxiety, weight gain and sleep disturbances.
Research into cortisol continues to highlight the complex balance this hormone maintains in your body. While short-term spikes are necessary for survival, chronic stress and consistently high cortisol levels can negatively affect both physical and mental health. Scientists are exploring ways to manage cortisol levels, especially in individuals dealing with long-term stress, to improve overall well-being. Cortisol helps us rise to the occasion but, when out of balance, it can also make life more difficult.
